The price of coffee has gone up nearly 92% over the past 12 months. As the “wildly increasing costs” get passed from the growers, to the coffee roasters, to the retailers, and ultimately the consumer; coffee lovers across the board are feeling the hit. Whether coffee is your occasional treat, or you are an avid espresso lover like me; you don’t want to see me without my morning Café Americano… The dramatic increase in coffee prices is making it increasingly difficult for restaurants and coffee shops to offer their products at “acceptable” prices. As prices continue to rise, less and less coffee is being sold; leading to a smaller demand on the supply. Perhaps this limited demand will help to drive prices down in the interest of “being competitive”, however, I feel that the opposite will be true. As more and more people are expressing a desire for “Specialty” coffees, I think a majority of the suppliers will focus their efforts on trying to stand out in that expensive niche. Only time will tell, I just hope that I don’t have to open up a new line of credit to get my daily dose of caffeine.
